Miriam Makeba: A Life in Music
After the sudden death of South African star and world renowned human rights activist MIRIAM MAKEBA, in Italy in the early hours of the 10th November, the family and estate of Mama Africa, as she was known to all, have discussed with BPR how to celebrate her legacy and keep her spirit and music alive.
Together they are planning worldwide tours starting in the summer of 2010 featuring her band and guest soloists with backdrops and audio visual displays.
The performances will present the full spectrum of Miriam’s musical career from the 50s with songs from the Manhattan Brothers and when she formed the Skylarks to the musical: King Kong. Then covering her period in exile in the United States where she became famous with hits like Pata Pata, the Click Song and Malaika, followed by her participation on Paul Simon’s Graceland tour in the late 80s.
This homage will cover Miriam Makeba’s unique blend of jazz and traditional melodies of South Africa.
A proportion of all concert and tour income will go to the support the Makeba Centre For Girls and the Miriam Makeba Family Foundation. The MMFF is in the process of being set up with Miriam’s house being made into a museum, library and general centre for arts and culture.
